Black Crappie can reach 3-4 lbs in ideal pond environments. The Black Crappie may be stocked into pond and lakes for additional forage and also for increased pan fish production. Black Crappie are known for their mild tasting filets. Black Crappie can be distinguished from White Crappie by the presence of 7-8 spines on the dorsal fin as opposed to the White Crappies 6 spines, and it's much darker Spots and pigmentation. Crappies are stocked only in Spring and Fall when the water temperatures are low and satisfactory for handling them.
